Introduction

My name is Ice Schaap, husband, and father of 3 children, with a passion for overall well-being, sports, and the outdoors.

Professionally, I graduated in Nursing (Mental Disorders), followed by a Bachelor of Community and Health, a Bachelor in Psychology, and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling. My studies allowed me to gain experience in different positions, including Mental Health nurse, Sociotherapist, Youth Worker, Student Support Officer, Specialist Educator, and Counselor.

Next to my professional career, I am an accredited trainer in combat sports and coached competitors for over 15 years. I also have an overall interest in exercise and outdoor activities and am a certified facilitator in (mountain) bike riding, bushwalking & navigating, rock-climbing, and water-sports, including swim teacher (Austswim). Furthermore, I am Duke of Edinburgh award leader.

I have arrived at a stage in my career where I combine my experience and passion for exercise and well-being and offer counselling, coaching, training, and exercise and outdoor therapy.

My practice is based in Mollymook, from where I work around the Shoalhaven, either face to face, online, or by phone, both individual and systemic.

I am ACA registered and a member of Outdoor Health Australia, NDIS approved.

Outdoor Therapy

As a certified instructor in a range of outdoor activities, I can offer Adventure Therapy, which is a modality of Outdoor Health. It is a diverse field of practice, combining adventure and outdoor environments with the intention to achieve therapeutic outcomes. The Shoalhaven is well known for its outdoors, with access to national parks, rivers, beaches, lakes, and mountains. The possibilities include hiking, biking, camps, diverse watersports, and climbing/abseiling.

Activities

Outdoor Therapy Activities

As a certified facilitator in (mountain) bike riding, bushwalking and navigating, rock-climbing, and water sports, including swim teacher (Austswim),  I am organising and facilitating a wide range of outdoor therapy activities, either one-on-one or in group settings. Furthermore, I am Duke of Edinburgh award leader.

I live and work in the Shoalhaven which is well known for its environmental diversity, including rivers, ocean, beaches, lakes, bush and mountains. Please have a read through the possibilities which I provide in Outdoor Therapy and don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to have more information.

Bush, beach, and town walks/hikes.

A wide range of walks and hikes is available in the nearby area, and there are always a few that suit your fitness level and personal interests. With experience in short walks to multi-day/night hikes I help you find the hikes that suit you. Walking in nature is linked with better mental/ physical health and improved mood. If you want to slow it all down or engage more with nature and yourself, outdoor therapy can help you.

Bike riding and mountain biking

The benefits of bike riding are well-researched and found numerous. The outdoor and exercise benefits that are achieved by hiking are still met and due to its low physical impact, balance, and coordination skills, cycling challenges the body and mind differently. As a (Dutch) cyclist enthusiast and cycle facilitator, I love cycling and encourage people to learn the skill or enhance their riding skills. I have previously worked with novice to advanced skilled cyclists and have seen young and older people change in their independence, social/physical health, and confidence when riding their bikes.

Water based activities

Water-based outdoor therapy activities include swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, paddle boarding, surfing, and even simply walking by the water, all of which can be used as therapeutic tools to promote physical health, mental well-being, and emotional regulation, especially when practiced in a natural environment with mindful focus. With multiple qualifications and over a decade of professional lifeguard experience, I can support your journey in water-based outdoor therapy. The sensation of water on the skin can also be grounding and provide sensory input.

With lakes, rivers, and the ocean on our doorstep, we offer the perfect activity for you.

Climbing and Abseiling

Outdoor therapy can be used to intentionally expose individuals to challenging or unfamiliar outdoor environments, pushing them beyond their comfort levels to promote personal growth, resilience, and self-awareness through physical activity in nature. The Shoalhaven has excellent climbing and abseil opportunities for all levels of climbers.

There are multiple indoor facilities, treetops experiences, and a range of rock formations that can be used for climbing and abseiling activities. As a qualified instructor, I will help you to challenge yourself safely and excitingly.
